I’m using the new-ish CSV Writer (Labs) in my workflow and looking to set the file parameter using a variable. The variable selection dialog shows no available variables. 
Is there no way to set the file parameter using a string variable?

Have you executed the workflow up to this point before. Sometimes the flow variables do appear then. And what variable are you trying to set.
Can you give us a sample workflow to demonstrate what is happening.
This node use a type of flow variable that only the csv reader and writer can create with 4.2. 4.3 will contain a lot if nodes that create and support this variable. Sorry for the inconveniences.
If you want you can use the nightly build. It already contains a couple of these nodes

For now, my workflow is using the older CSV Writer.
Nice to know there will be another alternative in the future.
