If You (like me have trouble updating KNIME), and the message you get is about lack of dependency (between new version and *SDK* version which is usually older), just choose KNIME core and SDK in updating option, it will update KNIME without further problem.
It will also eliminate any problems You would have with i.e. reporting in BIRT (null exception).
I do not know if this info is usefull but I will share it anyway, as this is solution to my and many others update problems we can have.
