Last week, we gave a KNIME beginners course in house and ask the people to install KNIME before. At the time we sent that email around we were not aware that KNIME 3 is already available as download as there was no announcement at this point. So it happened that the people had KNIME 3 installed as it is the top download of the download site. At this time, no community extensions were included with the full download.
Finally people started to download KNIME 2.12 during the course as some nodes were not available in KNIME 3.
All in all it would have been nice if the latest stable KNIME release (2.12) is the one on top of the download site. Then, people would have installed this.

Apologies for the confusion and the extra cycles you had to do during your inhouse workshop. We made a careful decision to put 3.0 on top (also with a disclaimer but apparently people don't read). The community extensions were added incrementally during the following week and are now almost complete.
I guess you even received the 3.0 notification as part of the community-developer update email, which was sent >1 week before the mass mail went out (but apparently still too late?)
Sorry again for the trouble! This shouldn't be as bad anymore now as more community extensions are available online.

Yes, I did get that email and was aware of the availability of KNIME 3 but I did assume that the download page still would lead people to the stable release (which was not the case; a fact I realized one day before our course when I wanted to install KNIME 2.12 on one of our machines but by mistake installed KNIME 3).
Anyhow, you are right. It is not a problem anymore. You might take that experience (that most people - like me - do not read carefully, but just download the first link they come accross) into account when setting up the download page for KNIME 4 ;-)
