I am thinking about using an external Raid with around 1400/MBs to use for Knime. How do I configure Knime to use that drive for its disk operations?

Move your workspace onto the new drive and set the temp directory in the preferences (KNIME) accordingly. You won't notice that much of a difference as the majority of operations are not I/O bound.
