Knime is INHERENTLY unstable, independent on using it with Java 1.6 or 1.7 and independent on using nodes. It can occur at all times, but it is especially frequent if a frame is opening for configuring nodes.
This afternoon alone it vanished with reporting any error at least 6 times.
I truly hope you can make an improvement on its stability.
I have to say the same, that the new version of KNIME (KNIME 2.6.0) is quite unstable. While previous ones has crashed once or twice, this one seems to crash every day.
At my desktops (I have several Windows desktops, with XP and 7) it happens in unpredictable situations (while performing calculation, editing nodes or reading files).
I'm attaching my configuration (from win XP).
I hope you will be able to solve the problem! Good luck!
I am running Knime 2.5.1 on Ubuntu 10.4 with JDK 1.7 what ever subversion is the current one.
The memory usage of Knime has been set to 12G. Before doing soon the frequency of crashing was even more frequent. I also use Knime to handle big data sets of molecules with a lot of attributes, so maybe I am just blowing the memory, suggesting that Knime maybe needs better parameters for putting old data on the hard disk. Nevertheless, the identical problem, though less frequent, occurs also on much smaller datasets.
Recently I updated from JDK 1.6 to 1.7 hoping that Knime would be more stable but it did not really help.
Knime just vanishes most frequently if a new frame is opening but not yet visible: either on double click for configuring, choosing configuring from the popup menu or viewing the results.

Note my reply in the thread regarding the eclipse bug, which seems to occur more frequently on Ubuntu than other Linux flavors. I believe it's because of the (3D) window manager.
It would be helpful if you can attach log files to this thread (hs_err_pid<xyz>.log) so that we can map the crashes to known problems. We are currently looking into upgrading the underlying eclipse to a newer version, which is not trivial unfortunately.
Also note that upgrading java on the system doesn't bring much as KNIME comes with its own JVM, which is located in <knime_install>/jre. If you rename/delete that folder it will use the java version that it finds on the system (Make sure it's not some openJDK, gcj)!
Sorry for the trouble.
Bernd
PS: I'm using KNIME on a Gnome2 desktop and don't see these problems.
This seems to be a different problem as you run it on Windows. KNIME 2.5.x and 2.6.x use the same java and eclipse version so it's hard to explain the instability you see in 2.6. Is it possible that these crashes relate to some specific nodes that you use (3rd party nodes that use some external libraries, maybe?). Can you attach the log files, please.
