Can I install KNIME parallel to my existing installation?

Hey KNIMErs,

I would love to try out the all new 5.1 version. However, when installing, I am required to uninstall the old (stable) version. Any way around this?

Reason I am asking is the new interface and I am not 100% sure if I want to continue with that or if I want to stick to the familiar 4.7.x interface for a while…

Or am I overseeing something obvious?

Just download the Zip file. Unzip it to the location of your choice and open it from there. You can also create a shortcut to the exe file location for your desktop.

I typically run a nightly zip file install and a more stable working version on my PCs. You can also add ZIP installs of old versions if you need them to collaborate with users holding to prior versions.

Yes, the new interface is different. There is an option to use the classic interface. I switched to that one and it looks the same as 4.7. You can switch back and forth.

Old interface and shortcuts seem to be working fine on my end. However, there are some 3rd party nodes that I use which don’t appear to be updated for 5.1 yet. I would definitely advise the Zip install and some testing with exiting workflows before an update of your working installation.

Hi guys!

Just a preview here, when I try to use an existing workflow from older version, the knime ask me and alert that it will change it to use only for the new version. So, if you wanna just a tryout, make a backup of your workflow before to use it into a new version.

Good point @denisfi. I am careful to always export workflows and then import copies between alternate versions so that I don’t corrupt working files. I never connect directly to my active workspace.

thank you for all the tips. Playing around with it right now

It’s a little bit “unusual” but I see it’s potential. The one thing I was hoping for (the newly promoted K-AI) I have not seen yet.

ps: I feel like I have posted this question before and that @iCFO has responded to it before. If that is the case, I’m sorry :bowing_man:

Hey @kowisoft,
if you want to try out the KNIME AI Assisstant:

  • Open KNIME AP 5.1
  • Click on the “i” (info page) icon on the top right
  • Install extensions
  • Search for “KNIME AI Assistant” and install

After restarting KNIME you will find a chat icon underneath your Space Explorer on the left

Sweet, thanks a lot.

I wonder on which “account” this runs? I read that KNIME uses chatGPT and I assume it connects to it via API but then it consumes credits (or tokens or whatever). On which account do these run?

In addition, right now I cannot connect. Is there a way to find out if the problem is on my side?

Thanks again

Hey @kowisoft,
the KNIME AI Assistant is a service provided by KNIME and the requests are send through KNIMEs account.

To connect with the KNIME AI Assistant you just need to use your Community Hub Account. I just tried it on a new KNIME 5.1 install and did not get any Error. Can you provide more information?

Hi @denisfi
the error here states that you did created this version with 5.1.0 nightly. This is special. If you are using a nightly we are always sending warnings because these should not be used in production.

However, we have extensive testing in the back end to make sure that workflows build with previous KNIME Versions are still running and provide the same values. There was a blog posts once about this. KNIME Meets KNIME – Are they Backwards Compatible? | KNIME.

Kind regards, Iris

Thanks for sharing @Alex_JW
and providing the “free” api option (at least for now)
I gave it a try. I seems it is somehow customized to only return nodes?

It is a customized Open AI based model that only draws on KNIME data for responses. It isn’t open to the wider Open AI model dataset or the web for responses at this point, so it is more of a workflow coach / builder on steroids.

Thanks @Iris for this feedback, I supposed about it but without confirmation.
