I had similar thoughts as I was playing with it this morning. Seeing the narrow panel (in your screenshot) as a quick preview when you single click/navigate the node seems reasonable, but if you double-click you are probably making an active effort to modify it and I suspect the next action will be to click the “expand” button 99% (if not 100%) of the time.
