I tried to reproduce your problem using the list of free sample FTP sites listed here (Free Public SFTP Servers - SFTP.net) but wasn’t able to.

There was a similar thread posted a few months ago, but no resolution was reached. Have you tried using a key file instead of user/pass authentication? My understanding is that’s a best practice for SSH anyway:
