With the File Reader node in version 4.4 I don’t see smiles as a supported translation. I also don’t see an alternative smiles reader [embedded for example in a csv]. I am having to use the deprecated version.

Can you give Complex Format node a try? Both mentioned nodes from 4.3. are now deprecated.
