huey UI for configuring pivot/filter?

Do you think a UI like huey (demo) would be more suitable for the pivoting node? Of course it is not possible to provide so intuitive configuration options like huey when the data is not available (maybe some fake data can be generated based on the domain, but that might also be missing) and probably not all capabilities of the pivoting node are supported.
Maybe a new node, which could do multiple steps (filtering and pivoting) in one go (as they are often closely related), might make sense with a UI like that.

Hi @aborg

Thanks for sharing this tool—it’s indeed a really interesting solution! I’m curious what aspects you appreciate the most.

  • The immediate live preview of your data?
  • The ability to break down Date & Time data by year, month, etc.?
  • The fact that filtering can be done in a single step (which differs from KNIME’s usual “one node per task” approach)?
  • the undo/redo possibilities?
  • something else I missed?

I’d love to hear more about what you find beneficial for configuring pivot node in KNIME, or rather what problems you often have currently.

I miss mostly the immediate preview of the results. I assume that would help the new users a lot. (I think I can pretty well predict the structure of the results now, but there are cases when I make mistakes.)

I do not work often with date and time, but I assume that breaking down by year or month/etc might be helpful for those who work with dates.

I think I prefer the individual steps approach of KNIME, as it is easier to understand the results (especially the intermediate results), but for exploration maybe the combined approach would be a better fit.

I do not think the undo/redo would be very useful/helpful in KNIME.

Thanks for your feedback @aborg!

I think you will be happy with the current ux concepts for new Pivot and GroupBy Nodes: We are aiming to have a live preview of your table, where you can see your settings directly applied. We try to make it as easy as possible to iterate on the settings in order to help the user to configure the output as they would like to have it. Furthermore, as soon as these nodes are moved to modern UI, K-AI has access and can configure it automatically in Build mode. I hope this gives your KNIME productivity a noticeable boost.

PS: Feel free to tell us more about your problems or ideas here in the Forum (You can tag me for everything about Nodes / Node Configuration). We appreciate feedback from our community.
