It has happened twice that after installing an extension in Version 4.7.1, the program would not restart, nor open from the desktop. Both times, I had to uninstall Knime and reinstall it and manually install all of my extensions.
It appears that the problem happens only rarely, but recovery is very awkward.
What am I doing wrong?

Sorry for the trouble. Was this issue connected to a particular extension? Do you happen to have a log file handy from around the time of the problem?
Also, just to check, is it possible you have some 4.6 update sites active?
