Would it be possible to have these nodes automatically add the correct file extension if it is missed out from the file name when typed in? I have lost count of the number of times this has happened to me!

I wouldn't automatically add the extension, if you typed in the filename by hand (because that makes it hard to create files without extension if you want to do so). But we can certainly add a missing extension if you used the browse subdialog. I will open a feature request.
