Beginning with 5.4 the Snowflake Connector no longer has the JDBC Parameter “authenticator” by default. I was getting an error until it was added. Was this planned?

by default the Snowflake Connector node only specifies the TIMEZONE and application parameter but not the authenticator parameter. So by default the node uses the internal Snowflake authenticator which is the default value as described here.
